Laser hair removal is a safe, non-invasive treatment that makes use of state-of-the-art laser technology to get rid of unwanted hair while simultaneously improving the appearance of skin imperfections. It minimizes hair growth and hyperpigmentation using a medical grade laser that sends pulses of light to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin.

This treatment is performed using the Palomar Icon™ XD Aesthetic System, which is a highly advanced, FDA-approved laser technology that offers long-lasting results for patients who want smooth, hair-free skin. It can be used on both the face and body and is suitable for all skin types.

Reasons To Undergo This Procedure

Unwanted hair growth can be managed through shaving, waxing, and various other methods. But these yield temporary results, which requires weekly or monthly sessions (or more frequently for shaving) to ensure smooth skin. Some of these methods can also result in redness, irritation, and possible skin discoloration.

Laser hair removal destroys the hair follicles without damaging the skin, and yields more permanent results compared to conventional hair removal methods. The Palomar Icon™ XD laser addresses the following issues:

  1. Facial and body hair overgrowth
  2. Hyperpigmentation
  3. Wrinkles or fine lines
  4. Varicose veins
  5. Scarring

What Are The Benefits?

Laser hair removal delivers a gradual decrease in hair thickness and an overall decrease in hair growth with each session. This virtually pain-free treatment also provides significant improvement in surface irregularities and skin discoloration, resulting in smooth, even-toned skin.

While the Palomar Icon™ XD laser is a completely safe, FDA-approved treatment, it is still essential to have it performed by a licensed professional to ensure the best possible outcome. As a double-board certified facial plastic surgeon, Dr. Jacob Sedgh is more than qualified to perform non-invasive laser treatments. Under his care, patients can expect the following results:

  1. Reduced hair growth
  2. Smoother complexion
  3. More even skin tone
  4. Firmer skin

When you come in for a consultation, Dr. Sedgh will explain the procedure so that you know what to expect before you undergo the treatment. He will also assess your skin and areas of concern to determine the number of sessions required to achieve the desired results. Multiple sessions are often necessary for complete hair removal, so the doctor will likely schedule several treatment sessions over the next few months.

Consultations for these treatments usually involve the following:

  1. Complete skin assessment
  2. Explanation of the procedure
  3. Discussion on number of sessions, intensity of laser, and more

For those who cannot come in for an in-office consultation, Dr. Sedgh can also discuss the treatment with you through a video conference call.

Face & Body Hair Removal Procedure

The Palomar Icon™ XD Aesthetic System makes use of a Skintel Melanin Reader to assess the average melanin density of the patient’s skin, which helps determine the settings to be used. This assessment is usually done during your consultation, although it can also be done immediately prior to the treatment.

Depending on the results of your skin evaluation and the size and location of the target area, Dr. Sedgh will use one of the following Palomar Icon handpieces:

  • 650-1200 nm spectral range
  • used for hair removal on large areas
  • tanned skin and skin types I to VI on the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale
  • best for darker hair

  • 650-1200 nm spectral range
  • used for hair removal on the bikini area and other hard-to-reach areas
  • tanned skin and skin types I to VI on the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale
  • best for darker hair

  • 525-1200 nm spectral range
  • used for hair removal and benign pigmented lesions
  • skin types I to IV on the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale

  • 525-1200 nm spectral range
  • used for hair removal and benign pigmented lesions
  • skin types I to IV on the Fitzpatrick Skin Type Scale

  • 1064 nm spectral range
  • used for hair removal and benign pigmented lesions
  • all skin types, including darker skin

Before the treatment can begin, a topical anesthetic gel will be applied to numb the target area and keep you relatively comfortable throughout the session. Once the area is sufficiently numbed, which should take at least 15 minutes, you will be asked to wear special safety glasses to protect your eyes from the pulses of light during the treatment.

Dr. Sedgh will then perform the treatment by aiming the laser at small sections of the skin until the entire target area has been treated.

The duration of the session will vary depending on the size of the area to be treated. The treatment may last for a few minutes for small areas like the upper lip, but can last up to an hour for larger areas such as the legs or back.

Laser hair removal is a simple outpatient treatment that is performed in the doctor’s office in less than an hour. Immediately after the session, a special cooling serum will be applied to the target area to help soothe and calm the skin. A layer of sunscreen will also be applied to protect the area from possible sun exposure.

You may notice some redness, dry patches, and some very mild discomfort on the treated area after treatment, but these should subside within the next few days. Since the laser also offers skin enhancing effects, you can expect the target area to become clearer and smoother within two to three weeks.

Once you have completed the recommended number of treatment sessions, Dr. Sedgh will then assess the level of hair regrowth and skin improvement in the target area. If needed, he may recommend further sessions to help you achieve completely smooth, hair-free skin.
