Recovery following septoplasty — a functional nasal surgery aiming to repair a deformed or deviated septum and restore healthy breathing — is relatively painless. Most patients can return home on the same day post-surgery.

But what about the entire healing process? It’s only natural that some patients may want to know how long deviated septum surgery recovery takes and any steps they can take to speed up the process.

How Long Does Septoplasty Recovery Take?

Full recovery for septoplasty can take several weeks up to six months. The recovery time varies, depending on several factors, including if the patient underwent additional nasal procedures in conjunction with septoplasty, such as cosmetic rhinoplasty.

Deviated Septum Surgery Recovery Time Off Work

People who underwent septoplasty are advised to take at least one or two weeks off work for recovery, depending on the nature of their job. Doctors may also recommend waiting three weeks after the surgery before patients can return to their normal routine.

The more time you can take off, the better; rest is crucial to the healing process as it allows your body to focus on recovering.

Deviated Septum Surgery Tips to Recover Faster & Better

After undergoing a septoplasty to correct a deviated septum, your physician will give you post operative instructions for recovery, as well as general tips to accelerate the healing process:

  • Rest on the first day
  • No showers or baths for the first 24 hours post-surgery
  • No swimming for six weeks
  • Do not rub, touch, or blow your nose even if it feels congested, especially in the first week
  • If sneezing is unavoidable, try to sneeze through the mouth
  • Rinse your sinuses at least three times a day to ensure no scar tissue or infection develops
  • To decrease pain and swelling, you can apply an ice pack covered with a clean cloth to the nose and eye area
  • Elevate your head when you sleep, especially for the first 24-48 hours
  • Wear clothes that you can fasten in front to avoid pulling clothing over your head;
  • Take slow and easy walks; walking stimulates circulation to draw toxins and fluid buildup away from the surgical site
  • Have a healthy diet — staying hydrated and eating foods that are high in fiber, protein, and restorative nutrients help you to recover quickly and reduce stress on the body
  • Avoid crowds (to prevent catching a cold) and dusty or smoky places
  • Avoid putting pressure on the face — for example, straining during bowel movements and wearing glasses for the first few weeks
  • Avoid air travel during your recovery as high altitudes can trigger pressure changes in your nose and bleeding
  • Avoid strenuous physical activity and intense exercise for at least two weeks, including bending over and lifting
  • Do not engage in any contact sports for at least one month

To ensure proper recovery, strictly follow your doctor’s orders and the specific aftercare plan they will provide, including prescribed medications.
