Cosmetic rhinoplasty is the most effective way to reduce the size of your nose at any age, but are the results really permanent? Does your nose stop growing after a nose job? Will your rhinoplasty results stay the same as you age? Can you even get rhinoplasty if you’re still growing?
Here we answer some common questions about how your age can affect your rhinoplasty results to help you determine if it could be a suitable option for you.
Does your nose stop growing after a nose job?
Your nose will continue to grow until you reach maturity, regardless of whether you’ve had a nose job. When a patient reaches maturity, the nasal bone will stop growing any larger, however, the nasal cartilage will continue to grow throughout your lifetime.
What age does your nose stop growing?
The answer to this will be different for everyone. While most girls reach maturity around 14 or 15 years of age, for boys, it’s usually around 15 or 16 years of age. Having said that, while the majority (around 90%) of nose growth will have been completed by then, minor changes may continue well into a person’s 20’s.
Can you get rhinoplasty while your nose is still growing?
If rhinoplasty is performed before a patient has reached maturity, there is a possibility that the nose will continue to grow and change, potentially jeopardizing the rhinoplasty results. In some cases, a patient may even require a revision rhinoplasty to address any resulting issues.
For this reason, most surgeons will suggest patients who are yet to reach maturity wait a few more years to allow the nose sufficient time to finish growing before rhinoplasty. At Sedgh Plastic Surgery, we generally recommend patients wait until they are at least 18 years old before having rhinoplasty. This will ensure the nose has reached its full size, with any changes to the nose thereafter likely only to be minor.
When does your nose go back to normal after rhinoplasty?
The short answer is that your nose will never return to its pre-surgical size or shape.
Immediately following your procedure it’s normal to experience swelling and bruising around the nose and cheeks. It can take a few weeks for most of this to subside, but it won’t be until around the three-month mark that you’ll be able to get an accurate picture of what “normal” looks like with your new nose.
Will your rhinoplasty results stay the same as you age?
The results of rhinoplasty are permanent; however, it is natural for your nose to continue to shift and change as you age. While aging rhinoplasty results will stay largely the same, as nasal cartilage continues to grow throughout your lifetime, it is normal for your nose to appear slightly larger or for the nasal tip to droop as you get older.
