What Are the Different Types of Chin Implants?

The chin plays a key role in determining how balanced an individual’s facial appearance is.

For those who are concerned about a weak or receding chin, a double chin, a poorly defined jaw or an asymmetrical facial profile, chin implant surgery (or mentoplasty) could provide the solution that helps them to achieve a more prominent chin profile and enhanced facial appearance.

If you’re considering chin implant surgery and want to understand what chin implant options are available to you, read on to find out more.

Types of Chin Implants

Chin implant surgery is performed by inserting an alloplastic implant made from a medical-grade, biologically-compatible synthetic material into the chin to enhance the chin’s projection.

There are two types of chin implants which are commonly used. These include smooth implants (such as a silicone chin implant) and porous implants (such as Teflon, Gore-Tex or Medpore implants).

The non-porous surface of a smooth implant makes it easier to maneuver within the chin. This makes for a simpler procedure, and makes implant removal a relatively easy process if ever required. In contrast, the small cavities of a porous implant help it to adhere to the chin tissue. While this means there is less likelihood of the implant shifting position, it also makes implant removal more difficult if ever needed or desired.

Are Chin Implants Permanent?

Yes, a chin implant is permanent.

While a chin implant can be removed, the patient will be required to undergo an additional surgical procedure to do so. For this reason, it’s important to carefully consider your decision to get a chin implant.

In most cases, we would recommend a patient considers chin augmentation with dermal fillers before committing to an implant procedure. Chin augmentation with dermal fillers is a non-permanent alternative to a permanent chin implant that will allow you to sample the type of result you may be able to achieve with a chin implant, without the long-term commitment.

Is a Chin Implant Worth It?

For the right patient, absolutely.

The chin is a key facial feature that can greatly determine a person’s overall facial aesthetic. A chin implant procedure can dramatically improve the balance of the facial features while also improving the contours of the neck.

We often perform chin implant procedures for both men and women. While a male chin implant can produce a more masculine result by addressing a weak jawline or a short or narrow chin, a female chin implant can be used to produce a smaller, pointier chin, or address a square chin or heavy jawline.

If you’re looking for a permanent result, a chin implant is an ideal choice. However, as the procedure can’t always be easily reversed, we usually recommend trying chin augmentation with dermal fillers before making a long-term commitment to a chin implant.

At Sedgh Plastic Surgery, we also remove some of the guesswork by using Vectra imaging to help our patients visualize how their facial appearance will change from a chin implant procedure.
