It’s only natural to want to look your best when showing off your new appearance following rhinoplasty, and for many of us, that involves getting a facial. The idea of a facial after rhinoplasty can also be particularly appealing as many patients notice an exacerbation of blackheads caused by the nasal dressing that needs to be worn following the procedure.

If you’re wondering “when can I get a facial after rhinoplasty?”, here’s what you need to know…

Is it safe to get a facial after rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty surgery is the most effective way to improve the appearance and proportions of the nose. However, even though it is typically performed as an out patient procedure, it can still cause some bruising, swelling, nasal congestion or discomfort

While the nasal region is still recovering from the procedure, it’s best to avoid any type of activity which involves touching the nose, including facials. Touching the nose after rhinoplasty can be painful, cause damage or injury to the nasal tissues, or even undermine the results from the procedure.

When can I get a facial after rhinoplasty without risk of damage?

It typically takes around 2-3 weeks to make a general recovery following rhinoplasty, but it can take anywhere from 8-12 weeks before making a full recovery.

We usually recommend patients wait at least 3-4 weeks following rhinoplasty before considering any type of facial to allow the skin and nose ample time to recover. If the nose still feels tender, it’s best to delay your facial until the tenderness subsides.

We recommend waiting until you have made a full recovery before considering more intensive facials such as microdermabrasion, chemical peels or facial laser treatments.

Managing your skin care after rhinoplasty

Here are some helpful aftercare tips to help you manage your skin care regimen following rhinoplasty:

  • unless you have nose splints, you should be able to wash your face a few days after the procedure
  • choose products with gentle, non-irritating ingredients
  • avoid touching or pressing your nose as much as possible
  • apply a sensitive sunscreen before going outside
  • avoid using any exfoliants for several weeks
  • avoid wearing makeup for the first few weeks, but when you’re ready, opt for natural, organic products
  • wait several months before considering cosmetic injectables
  • always follow the instructions provided by your surgeon
