Facial fat transfer is an innovative and effective non-surgical treatment that contours or reshapes your face using fat cells safely harvested from other parts of your body where they’re abundant and usually unwanted. Some patients prefer facial fat transfers to dermal fillers and other injectables because they don’t involve foreign substances. The fat transfer is an ideal procedure for patients who want to enhance their lips, fill hollow cheeks, or liven up sunken eyes. This article provides a detailed overview of the facial fat transfer procedure.

What is Facial Fat Transfer?

As you age, your face starts losing natural volume in the cheeks, lips, and the under-eye region. The loss of volume, whether due to aging or other external factors, makes you look gaunt and tired. It can also lead to textural irregularities or make your wrinkles and fine lines appear prominently. Facial fat transfer restores lost facial volume, making you look significantly younger and healthier.

During your facial fat transfer consultation, our board-certified cosmetic surgeon examines your facial skin, discusses your cosmetic concerns and your expectations for the procedure, and determines the ideal donor sites, i.e., the regions from which to harvest fat cells. The doctor creates a treatment map based on your unique cosmetic expectations and then extracts the fat cells from another part of your body.

After extraction, the fat cells are filtered to remove all impurities, preparing them for injection in treatment areas. Finally, a small needle is used to inject the purified fat cells into strategically-chosen locations around your face. Injections are performed gradually to ensure optimal fat distribution. We may inject a bit more healthy fat than appears necessary, in order to make up for the inevitable fat cell reabsorption.

The procedure concludes within an hour with no corresponding recovery period or downtime. You can resume your daily activities immediately after the treatment.

Corresponding Procedures

The facial fat transfer produces natural-looking enhancements to your facial contours, but it doesn’t drastically change your facial structure. Sometimes, patients combine a facial fat transfer with implants to enhance the results further. Some patients also combine a facial fat transfer with surgical procedures like rhinoplasty to make greater structural changes to their facial anatomy. Your surgeon may recommend a combination of procedures based on your unique cosmetic goals and expectations.
